Excited. And Overwhelmed.

March 10, 2008 – 9:41 am

That title pretty much sums up how I am feeling about our time in Austin last week.

Excited. We met with a number of pastors. Most of them have been involved with church planting in different parts of the city in the last few years. One sentiment was consistent: Austin is full of opportunities for new churches. The spirit of cooperation among these other pastors was nearly overwhelming as each one is consumed by their love for the city.

“I think you two will fit very well in Austin.” This was an unsolicited comment from one pastor who has spent several years in the area. We were encouraged by that. The time we spent in the city confirmed our impressions that it is a place where we would connect well. If you want to read more bits and pieces about our time in Austin, I posted some reflections on my personal blog each day.

And overwhelmed. With so much opportunity, it was hard to take it all in. While much church planting is concentrated in growing suburbs, cities don’t get as much attention. We have felt a burden to be in the city every since we left Arizona. One thing became clear in our Austin explorations: like most urban centers, it isn’t cheap to live near the city center. More than ever, we are aware of how much we are relying on the faithful generosity of others to help make this happen. There is a temptation to just settle ourselves on the edges of Austin, but we know that wouldn’t be genuine to the call we feel.

Some things to be praying for:

  • Health - With a kindergardener, a toddler, and an infant, our family has had a hard time being healthy this winter. Sherri has also been sick a lot as her body struggles to get the rest it needs while caring for Max. The housing market has slowed down here, and we need to get our house on the market as soon as possible in anticipation of a summer move. We have a few projects to complete around the house before we list it, plus we want to keep it looking nice and would-be buyers come to see the house. Please pray for health and energy to maintain a presentable home.
  • Location - With a highly relational model of church planting, we know that the neighborhood we land in will matter a great deal. We are operating on the simple idea that where we would like to live would be where those who we will connect well with would like to live. Pray that God will lead us to the right location.
  • Generosity - Please join us in praying about the need for generous partners as we ramp up fund raising in the coming weeks. We are thankful that a number have already given to the work, and many more have expressed their willingness. For those who desire to give, I have set up a Giving page with instructions on how you can do so.

  2. Hey John,

Ben and I will be praying for your family over the next couple of months. I know that there are a lot of things that have to fall into place to make the move happen/go smoother. I hope you are able to sell your house at just the right time so that you can live in it until you move away. We love you guys and would love to come visit you in Austin some day. Tell your girls and little Max hello.

  4. John,

It was great to hear you preach at Vista on Sunday. I actually bought in to your shameless advertisement and wrote down your blog site to check it out. My husband Jesse was the guy running the sound system. Anyway, ironically enough the day before you preached at Vista I was randomly looking online at Mission opportunities in New England where my husband and I use to lead worship and were involved in collegiate ministry work. I decided to check out the Texas area and see what needs were around here the only thing in Austin is for something called PowerPlant. It is training up college students to become church planters and Austin will be one of the strategic cities. Thought you might be interested as a way to recruit some help as you start a new church. the website is http://powerplant.studentz.com
And again I really enjoyed the message on sunday!
